The Upstate market

Greenville’s Hospitality Scene Is Feeling the Squeeze

Greenville has become one of the Southeast’s great places to eat and drink, from Main Street and the West End to neighborhood taprooms along the Swamp Rabbit Trail. But Upstate bars and restaurants have been hit hard by liquor liability costs, with many seeing premiums double or nearly double in the past year.

When the new state requirements took effect in January 2026, some Greenville businesses couldn’t find a carrier willing to write a compliant policy at all. One local taproom near the Swamp Rabbit Trail closed indefinitely in March after being turned down by multiple carriers. Upstate operators need an insurer that will actually look at their business.

How we underwrite the Upstate

Insurance That Takes the Time to Know You

Most carriers price Upstate bars from a form and a checklist. We do it differently.

We make the drive

We visit businesses in person, and sometimes unannounced, to see how they really run on a busy night. It’s slower than an online quote, and it’s how we tell a well-run bar from a risky one.

We talk to your neighbors

We speak with other bar owners and managers in the area. In a close-knit hospitality community like Greenville’s, local reputation says a lot about how a business is run.

We measure the right thing

Instead of declining a business over its alcohol percentage, we look at how much alcohol is served per guest. That’s a much better measure of liquor liability risk, and it’s fairer to a busy taproom or sports bar.

What Greenville Operators Need to Know

Greenville businesses follow the same state rules as the rest of South Carolina under H.3430, which took effect January 1, 2026:

$1 million in liquor liability coverage if you serve alcohol on-premises after 5 p.m.

State-approved server training for anyone who serves alcohol, within 30 days of hire.

An approved ID scanner at the door if you serve between midnight and 4 a.m.
